Well met, fellow anime connoisseur! ‘Tis I, Sir Numb of House Arms again, bringing you with more tales of the realm. It is the month of May already, with the land still blighted and sanity is in short supply. But steel your resolve, fellow traveler, for imagination is always on our side, as long as you know where to look~

1. Madoka Magica Sequel Movie, The Tale of Desperate Magical Girls Continues!

It is finally here, a sequel movie after the Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie -Rebellion- (Hangyaku no Monogatari), which was released on the 6th of October 2012, was teased during the anime series’ 10th anniversary online event in Japan that happened this year on the 25th of April.

Entitled Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgis no Kaiten, bringing back the original cast and staff altogether for another round of psychological thriller with cute mahou shoujos (magical girls).

Even the writer, the nicknamed “ Butcher ” himself, Gen Urobuchi, admitted he was ecstatic that the script he made FIVE YEARS AGO is finally going to the silver screen.

The upcoming movie is the forth one, with the first two subtitled Hajimari no Monogatari (Beginnings) and Eien no Monogatari (Eternal), being the condensed versions of the TV anime series. Would Kalafina go back to sing their themes? A long shot, but HOPEFULLY! Date of release is yet to be announced…


2. Made In Abyss Season 2 n’ ACTION!

Speaking of kids in despair, Akihito Tsukushi’s Made in Abyss is getting a second season for its anime series along with a 3D action RPG sometime next year, 2022.

Season two, entitled Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ōgonkyō ( Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City ), takes place right after the events of the third movie, Made in Abyss: Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei (Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul).

The first two movies, Tabidachi no Yoake (Journey’s Dawn) and Hourou Suru Tasogare (Wandering Twilight), are just the condensed movie versions of the anime series’ season one (much like the title above).

The video game, Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness is being developed by Spike Chunsoft, and will feature a fully voiced original story line supervised by the original creator himself. It will be ported on PS4, Switch, and PC via Steam, in both Japanese and English. What harrowing journey awaits these young adventurers within the beautiful yet perilous bowels of The Abyss..?


3. Meikyuu Black Company On Tee Vee!

No, it is not in any way related to Glen Cook’s novel… Meikyuu Black Company ( The Dungeon of Black Company ) is a manga drawn and written by Youhei Yasumura, started publishing on the 5th of December 2016 and is still on-going to this very day.

It is a story about a lazy modern era guy, Kinji Ninomiya, that got isekai’d into a fantasy world and got shoved into hard manual labor by some evil mining company. Slated for an adaptation animated by Studio SILVER LINK, to premiere sometime this year on July.


4. Animated Battle Game in 5… 4… 3… . . .

Deatte 5-byou de Battle (Battle in 5 Seconds After Meeting) is a manga written by Saizou Harawata and drawn by Miyako Kashiwa, published on the 11th of August 2015 and is still on-going.

Featuring a battle royale centric plot with some super science themes, and an edgy teen-aged logic puzzle nerd as the main protag, souped up with experimental super powers like the rest of his lab rat mates. An adaptation is on the works under Studios SynergySP and Vega Entertainment to handle the 2D animations, and Studio A-CAT for the CGs. Scheduled to be aired on the 13th of July, this year.

5. Sailor Moon Eternal on Netflix

Netflix just announced that they will be airing the Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal (Pretty Guardians Sailor Moon Eternal) movies this year on the 3rd of June, along with its English dub cast listed as follows:

The two movies premiered in Japan on the 8th of January and the 11th of February 2021 respectively, produced by Toei Animation and Studio DEEN.

It is considered as the fourth installment of the anime series’ 2017 reboot of Naoko Takeuchi’s classic original magical girl manga.

6. Yoshimaho, A Daycare of Beautiful Men…

Have you ever get tired of the daily grind? Being an adult, working your arse off day in and day out just to pay your bills and put bread on the table?

Have you ever wanted to go back to the good old days of being a spoiled brat and not having a care in the world? Then what you need, is a magical pacifier…

Yoshi Yoshi Magic is pretty much about that, the MC buys said magical pacifier, suckles it, then gets isekai’d to some fantasy daycare center filled with pretty boy caretakers.

We know where this is going~ An original anime produced by Studio DLE, and is slated to premiere sometime this year on July.


7. Spriggan, The Military Kind

Put your dice or your Nerve Gear away, this is not the fey you are looking for~ Spriggan is a Classic, Military, Sci-Fi, Action -manga written by Hiroshi Takashige and drawn by Ryouji Minagawa, published on the 8th of February 1989 up until the 25th of January 1996.

It had its first anime movie adaptation premiered on the 5th of September 1998 and produced by Studio 4°C. 23 years into the present, it is finally getting a new anime adaptation under David Productions and is slated to premiere this year on Netflix.


8. Metal Skin Panic Kickstarter Go Brrrrrrr~~

Another classic getting a fresh coat of paint! Metal Skin Panic : MADOX-01 was an original video animation (OVA) that premiered back in the 15th of December 1987 under the direction of Shinji Aramaki. Its licensors, AnimEigo, had launched a Kickstarter Campaign on the 1st of May 2021, to give the OVA the HD treatment, featuring English subtitles and an English dub, and release it on Blu-ray, with the nickname “ Unobtanium Edition ”.

The campaign would last until the end of the month with a pledge goal of $50,000. To their surprise, the goal was met within the first 42 minutes from its launch! During the time of this writing, it has reached $142,643.


9. Sonny Boy, Not What It Seems

Looks like Studio Madhouse has another supernatural offering. Sonny Boy is a Sci-Fi survival anime directed by Shingo Natsume and is scheduled to premiere sometime this year. A promotional teaser video was released on the 28th of April, featuring rock band Ging Nang Boyz performing the theme song “ Shounen Shoujo ”, not to mention stunning visuals and slice of life’ish school themes.


10. COVID-19, Anime Ja Nai!

Meanwhile in real world news… The national government in Japan declared on Friday, 7th of May, to extend its current state of emergency, which started on the 25th of April, until the end of May on the following four prefectures: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo.

Also putting Aichi and Fukuoka prefectures on state of emergency as well starting on the 12th of May. It was first intended to curb the amount of travel during Golden Week holidays, now they are trying to ease the heavy strain on certain prefectures’ hospital systems.

With that, the above mentioned prefectures, along with the other prefectures under precautionary restrictions, will have social events continued to be restricted until June. So expect some delays on anime releases. As anime fans, let us wait warmly and pray for the future.
